SYNERGISTIC ANTI-CORROSIVE PIGMENTS
FOR IMPROVED COIL COATINGS

Columbia, Maryland (October 14, 1998) - Grace Davison, a unit of W. R. Grace & Co.-Conn., has announced that SHIELDEX® corrosion-inhibiting pigments can be combined in coil coating formulations with one or more complimentary anti-corrosive pigment technologies to increase the protective strength of the coating dramatically over coatings that rely upon just one anti-corrosive pigment.

Anti-corrosive or inhibitive inorganic primer pigments interact chemically, either directly or indirectly, with metal substrates to reduce the rate of corrosion. A wide range of inorganic primer pigments are available to formulators including chromates, phosphates, phosphites, molybdates, borates, and other anti-corrosive materials. The SHIELDEX line of anti-corrosive pigments are based on calcium-ion exchanged amorphous silica gel, and are highly compatible with other environmentally-friendly anti-corrosive pigments. They possess neutralizing power due to the basic character of the pigment surface, can be used in a wide variety of resin systems, and are highly effective due to their low density and high surface area.

Grace Davison’s SHIELDEX product line includes SHIELDEX® AC 5, a 5-micron particle size version for solvent-based and waterborne systems, SHIELDEX® AC 3, a 3-micron particle size micronized grade for wash primers or 2-K-paints, and SHIELDEX® C 303, a 3-micron particle size high performance grade for coil coatings, powder coatings, and acid curing systems.
